Alan Kwan builds companies around technology worth owning.

Australian born and working across Hong Kong, Australia and China, he is a co-founder of The Super Group, the private family office and the technology company it built. He is Chairman of BOSA Technology Holdings, a technology company he has chaired since 2017 and through its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2018, where he also chairs the Nomination Committee and sits on the Audit Committee. He is a director of Bionic Vision Technologies, the Australian company developing a bionic eye to restore sight to people living with inherited blindness, and a principal of State Path Capital, the Hong Kong investment company behind its US$18 million funding.

His early career was spent in mining and property development, and in building enterprise IT systems in Singapore, where over thirteen years as Executive Director of JMC Technologies he led the build of a digitisation platform whose payment and wallet systems were certified by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He has since served as Chairman and Chief Executive of AL Group, an interior design and fit-out company listed in Hong Kong, and is a director and the largest shareholder of PepCap Resources, listed on the TSX Venture Exchange. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Health Science and a Graduate Diploma in Law.

His method is the same in every company he builds. Identify defensible intellectual property. Bring the capital and the relationships to commercialise it. Build it into a listed, enduring company. It is the thinking that took BOSA to its Hong Kong listing, and the thinking he now applies to one of the most ambitious medical technologies of the decade.

P/01.3 — The bionic eyeBionic Vision Technologies

One of his most ambitious bets
is on sight itself.

Bionic Vision Technologies, where he sits on the board, is developing a bionic eye: a retinal implant that restores functional vision to people blinded by retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited condition that affects roughly one in 4,000 people worldwide and for which there is no cure.

A small implant at the back of the eye works with a camera to return a usable sense of sight, the kind of breakthrough that changes a life rather than improves a product. The company grew out of the Australian research effort that set out to do for sight what Cochlear did for hearing. Its second-generation device was implanted in four patients between 2018 and 2021, with 97 percent of electrodes still functioning after two and a half years, and in 2017 State Path Capital, with China Huarong International, backed the company with US$18 million to take it toward market.

Why it matters

It is a clean expression of how Kwan invests. A genuinely defensible technology, a credible Australian science base, the capital and partnerships to commercialise it, and a path to a listed company. The upside is measured in both returns and eyesight.
